Urology is a surgical speciality and can trace its origin to medieval lithologists, who specialized in surgical removal of bladder stones. Today, urology combines management of medical (i.e. non-surgical) problems such as urinary infections and surgical problems such as the correction of congenital abnormalities and the surgical management of cancers.

The urologist is a specialist doctor who is trained in pathologies of the male and female urinary system as well as the male reproductive organs, due to the multitude of clinical problems that arise, the urologist must have extensive knowledge of internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics and other urologists are also trained as surgeons and offer patients surgical options for many urologic conditions. A urologist is different from a nephrologist. Nephrology is a separate field of medicine that focuses specifically on kidney disease and function. While a urologist treats patients with kidney stones or kidney cancer and offers surgical options, a nephrologist treats patients with diabetes. Nephrology is a nonsurgical field, which means nephrologists are not surgeons.
